Why do they have to get old?

Just read this whole thread in one go and sitting here in tears for you and Leo and for all of us who have lost our best friends to time. Which is pretty much all of us. Many of his changes over the last months sound so familiar to me from Brogan's last year. It's so heartbreaking.

I'm so, so sorry. What a miracle is your Leo and I wish you all the courage in the world to enjoy this last special time with him.

It's so sad, and so incredibly tough for you. You know you have support here whenever you need to cry on the shoulders of those who understand - or to get silly on other threads to give yourself a bit of respite. I'm sure you will make some beautiful memories together to add to all the others you have.

My one piece of advice is this: be as compassionate and gentle with yourself as you would be if you were talking to someone else who was in this situation.

Big hugs.

You have made the hardest decision for your loving friend but it is the kindest last thing you will ever do for Leo which is out of pure love. Make more wonderful memories in Wales. I'm so very sorry for you Leanne. We are all here for you xxx :hug:

Thanks all...

He fell over today. His front legs literally gave way and he landed on his face. He got straight back up and didn’t even appear to notice - but then fell over again a few hours later. Same thing, he hasn’t tripped or slipped he just falls over.

At the moment it’s just constant pacing - to the door, back again, to the door, back again. He doesn’t want to go out, he doesn’t want to lay down - it’s like he’s waiting for something - probably food - he is Absolutley food obsessed now. This is the dog who I used to sit on the floor with hand feeding him food because otherwise he wouldn’t eat - he used to have a bowl of kibble down and there it would stay for days at a time with him just taking the odd bite - now the only time he really reacts is at dinner time where he wolfs his food and then looks for more.

Raw Chicken drumsticks for dinner followed by some steak and mash potato. Me.. who has NEVER fed a dog human food is now letting him eat whatever he likes. I fed him from the fridge 🙈

Good. Do it. If he gets enjoyment from food, give him food. Give him all the foods he has never had before but you know he'll love. He will love it and, more importantly, it will give you some pleasure to see him loving it. Treasure all the firsts you can still experience together, even at this stage.

Exactly that - if it gives him some pleasure and interest then why not, it’ll make you feel better too. You’re nurturing him in the best way you can x

The cottage is amazing! We have been exploring all morning, fresh spring water from the stream runs directly outside our cottage - the farm is so secluded that the dogs can go off and explore as much as they want with the resident dog (Mas has made a firm friend 😂) now both tucked up along side the log burner.
