You can lead a dog to a bed…

…. but you can’t make him lie on it!! A newly purchased cooling pad, to be exact.

It’s quite hot here this week, and I decided that this summer I would get one of those pads for Simba. Generally he hangs out in the shady part of the garden when it’s hot outside, or under the deck. And when inside he’s downstairs where it is cooler. But at night he sleeps up in our bedroom, which can get very hot when it’s hot outside.
So I thought we could try this, to put on top of his bed. We got it earlier this week and have been putting it in various places around the house where he would normally lie. Simba regards it with Deep Suspicion. I tried putting it on top of his bed in the living room. He refused to lie on it out of his own volition. He will lie on it if promoted and given a treat to do so  but he doesn’t stay there.
It has a vinyl-type cover so I’m wondering it that is the problem- not the fuzzy surface he’s used to.
Do any of you have one of these? Does your dog use them?

We tried one when Kipper was younger, and he wasn’t keen - similar to you, I think it was the vinyl surface that put him off.

Yes my two have one each. They are only cheap ones though. Sometimes they use them, I just leave them about when its hot.
Fred likes the tiled floor in the kitchen better

Joy just stands on hers and tries to fluff it up with her paws, then goes and lies in the middle of 'my' flowers, which she considers to be her cool patch in the garden. She completely ignores it if I put it out inside. I think that she doesn't find it comfortable, but I still optimistically put it out for her if the weather's warm.

Perhaps he will lie on it Lisa if the weather does get very hot and he is seeking a cool place to lie?
Maybe he just doesn't need it yet?
If it does get hot in your bedroom can he take himself away?

Harley has got 3 spread around the house and takes herself to them when she’s too hot. If we put it on any of her beds she won’t go on it. She also won’t lie on one in our bedroom for some strange reason! It took her a few days when we first started buying them, but now we couldn’t do without them.

To put it simply, they absorb the thermal energy from your pooch, which cools the mat down to a much lower temperature – around 10° lower than the external environment. Cooling mats, such as the Crufts Pet Cooling Mat, can be used for around 3-4 hours.

Interesting! Thanks all! In reading the reviews before I bought it, many said their dog was wary at first but then loved it. I would love to know what flipped the switch!

I thought of putting a towel over top but I think a towel would be too thick - he wouldn’t get the cooling effect. This particular brand does have a cover you can buy separately so I might get that - it’s on Amazon, though, not at the local store we bought it at.

@Jelinga we do leave the bedroom door open when it’s really hot. Sometimes he leaves but sometimes he doesn’t. We also put the fan on when it’s really hot and he will go lay in front of it - last night I put the cooling mat in front of it but I think he laid BESIDE it:rolleyes:

I’ll keep putting it around the house and up in our bedroom at night, and we’ll see how it goes….

Snowie has 2 40x40cm pads laid next to my bed, with a down pillow (mind you!) at the end for his head. He moves around at night. When he’s hot, he lies on the pads. When he’s cold, he sleeps on our bed. And I guess in between he sleeps on his very, very comfy bed.

How they work: When your dog lies on them, the heat of his body causes the inner substance to melt (it’s a crystal substance), which draws heat, making it feel very, very, very cold. Once all the crystal has melted, it stops drawing heat and starts to warm up. As soon as your dog gets off, it starts to go back to a solid. You can put it in the freezer to quickly get back to solid.

Not having a lot of success…ho hum. I keep moving it around the house and putting it up in our bedroom by the fan where he lies. He’s ok with lying on it but he doesn’t prefer it. Oh well. On the weekend we bought a portable air conditioner that was on for a good price. We can put it in our bedroom for those few really hot nights we get. It was on back order so we won’t get it for a couple of weeks, in the meantime will keep trying.
