i feel I should clarify my earlier post. She wasn’t showing any signs of age but she was approaching 10 so we wanted to be ahead of the game. We’d got a ramp for the car which a friend no longer needed (his dog refused to use it) and taught Holly to use it. We were also looking at cars with a...

A memory box is a nice idea. I guess that we’re doing that by keeping some of her favourite and oldest toys. Absolutely right.

Its a difficult choice. Every time we see her toys, bowls and bed it reminds us that she’s no longer here. We want to move on but at the same time we don’t want to let go. We’ve taken some of her favourite toys (including some of her very first ones) out of the box as mementoes of a wonderful...

Our friend Avril came around today with Cooper, a Poodle/King Charles cross. We chatted for hours over several cuppas and played with Cooper. He's an energetic little chap, and the first dog I've met who can open a biscuit tin without using his paws. He decided to empty Holly's toy box all...

    Thank you

We've just received a lovely bunch of flowers from our forum friends. At a time like this its very reassuring to know that so many people remember Holly and the special place she held in our hearts. Thank you all for your kindness.

Today I plucked up courage to take all Holly's unused medicines back to the vets. I went at a quiet time, steeled myself in the car park and walked in the door. Holly would always enter the vets and trot over to the scales. As soon as I saw the scales my composure collapsed. The receptionist...

We scattered the ashes for Gypsy and Cocoa in their favourite places. Gypsy had a favourite walk in the Cotswolds and Cocoa liked Slade woods, not far from where Rosie and Pongo live. Holly had a few favourite places such as the Beacon, Crabtree Hill and the Dog Dip. We haven't yet decided...

In a year where I lost my mother and Holly, I can understand what you're saying. Our dogs are like children in their needs for attention, training, love, food and every other aspect of life. We build memories with them. We pour our love into them, and they give it back unconditionally. Holly...

These last few days have been hard. Holly's presence is everywhere. We walk into a room expecting to see her but she's not there. We walk to the shops and expect her to pull us towards the pet shop. I drive the car and expect to see her head in the rear-view mirror. We sit to watch the TV...

We're keeping a few things which have particular memories attached. She had a huge chew root which she always carried around the house when greeting people. It will make a wonderful door stop and keep her memory alive. Only a few visitors will know the story behind it.

We've not had much sleep, but today we realised that we have to start the big clear-out. This morning we sorted out Holly's belongings - and its amazing how much she had. There were beds, two toy boxes and a laundry basket full of toys. She was never one for destroying toys, she much...

Holly died peacefully this morning. Ruth and I were holding and stroking her as she slipped away. Her heart condition had been stable for over two months but she started a rapid downhill slide on Boxing day. A vet visit on Tuesday tried to stabilise her again. This morning we took the...

Trip to the emergency vet for Hunter

Dark brown is typical of a blockage. In Hollys case they held back from operating for a couple of days to see if it cleared naturally. They kept her in under observation. Fortunately it did start to clear.

Trip to the emergency vet for Hunter

Poor lad. What colour was the poo? When Holly had a blockage it was very dark and almost like tar.

Holly had a checkup today. She's been stable for the month since her last checkup. Her at-rest breathing seems to have settled at 30, and her heart at 100 with occasional missed beats. This seems to be the new normal, which is infinitely better than her condition 3 months ago. The vet seems...

We walk at Holly's speed these days. If she wants to stop and sniff we stop and wait.

Holly's been walking quite well for a while so today we did something different. We took her into Hereford. The walk from the Leisure Centre into the town is about is about 25 minutes (with sniff stops) across parks and the Cathederal green. We walked this route into town to give Holly some...
