Got an appointment for a review with our vet next Friday. Lady is back on normal walks now after a period of reduced exercise. I think she's doing ok. How do I know I hear you ask. Well yesterday we were walking a field margin and we put up a covey of grey partridge. The SBD then flushed a...

    Nosework training

Labs really love this sort of thing and my girl is no exception. It's a real boon as well as she now has arthritis in her elbows and can't really run around anymore so a bit of scent work is ideal. Also putting the target downwind of her is good for making her remember we are a team and if she...

Well the SBD has been on Metacam for just over week now and she seems to tolerate it just fine and seems to be much easier in her movements. The vet said it didn't matter what time of the day I gave her the dose at it gave a full 24 hours of relief so I tried morning to start with then switched...

2nd day on Metacam and she's already much more active. Ran to the garden gate this morning and had a sit down strike when I said it was time to go home. She's in the garden at the moment doing hunt the kibble. Also been in the garden with me supervising putting new windows in the garden shed...

Just got back from the vet. Daily Metacam from now on and 15 minute lead walks for the next 4 - 6 weeks to make sure the acute problem in her right elbow has settled down properly. Taking her back for a review after 6 weeks. A lady in the waiting room went all gooey over the SBD saying she...

    Well here you all are!!!

Well she's not actually that small. She weighs in around 27/28kg if she's at her fighting weight and I did measure her once and she's right on the lower limit of the KC measurements for the breed. I just call her the Small Black Dog because she's smaller than any of the other Labs I know. I...

    Merlin update

Thanks so much for the update. He's a lovely boy and looks like a softy too. Re the above, I find I need to restrict the SBD to blind retrieves only because if she can see the dummy/tennis ball she does a rolling dive on it that's absolutely horrific to watch knowing her history.

Yes it's one of those decisions we seem to have to make for our dogs. Which is Merlin in your avatar. They are lovely dogs!

I think there are a lot of variables, but the SBD has done ok I think. I discussed exercise with the vet a while back and decided she should have an active life rather than a restricted one even if that meant she would get problems a little earlier. We tried to avoid jumping (always difficult...
