Angel. Born June 30th.

I just love the OEM colouring on Angel and many of the other pups. Cute as a button. ❤

My only advice regarding food is to remember that this is a giant breed. Feeding for slow growth is important for proper joint development and longevity. A giant breed like a mastiff (or mastiff mix in Angel's case) can take 3 years to get to their full height and weight. So Angel may need quite a bit less or different food than other smaller dogs you've raised, even if that seems counter-intuitive. I'm well out of that scene so can't recommend any resources, but you might want to have a look around for forums, breed clubs, etc. that specialise in the giant breeds like OEMs, Rottweilers, and other kinds of mastiffs.

Or maybe Angel just has OEM colouring and is going to be "Labrador-sized"...? In which case, feel free to ignore me entirely. 😂
The breeder is using a Walmart puppy food, at a $12/bag budget. The ingredients look acceptable but it has a long list, and lots of added supplements.

I'll be looking for multiple protein sources, and fewer ingredients. With a per bag budget of $50-80 that's what we spend on Shamas.

Based on parents, pups are expected to be 90ish lbs. Buddy is more Dane in shape and stands at my hip, at 90lbs. Sierra is about my knee, and 70

I would definitely choose a large breed puppy food for this pup. A couple of the foods I considered were Pro Plan large breed, GO or Now Fresh large breed - not sure where they sit price-wise. It’s really overwhelming, but I would choose a grain inclusive food for a puppy.

Curious about why you say this. Not that I am pro or anti grain, but I do use grain free just now. Just wondering what your train of thought is on it.
Our first vet with Quinn was of the opinion that there is no need to elimate anything from a puppy’s diet and that grain free was too “new” - and then with DCM and potential linkages to boutique and/or grain free (nothing concrete has ever been released at this point) our current vet also suggests grain inclusive for puppies.

We went with orijin large breed puppy food. Of the three good quality foods jin the shop, this one had no salmon or salmon byproducts. And my daughter has a salmon allergy

They met today for the first bonding session. She's extremely vocal. Friends with the cats, which is great because she will share space with one, and her mother has just a touch of resource guarding....which I see as not necessarily a bad thing because she will understand quickly when Shamas tells her to stay away from his bowl.

All in all she's shaping out nicely. Well socialized, friendly and not at all skittish 20210725_183547.jpg20210725_183547.jpg20210725_183533.jpg

Shamas only guards his food bowl, and specific toys. So I'm pretty sure we can manage his guarding by giving him smaller, more frequent meals, and putting away balls.

I agree, I would also avoid grain free foods. At best, I think they’re a marketing gimmick, and at worst there’s the apparent links to DCM.

I've heard that too. It has to do with the legumes used as carb replacement. . I don't go out of my way to avoid anything but salmon

So angel is here. A little earlier than expected because the owners cat escaped and brought home fleas. They didn't want the puppies getting infested at 7 weeks.

I'll treat all of my other animals, and the house...and start Angel on revolution at 8 weeks when she gets her shots.

In meantime, I'm going to run out for a comb tomorrow...I can't find mine20210804_224630.jpg20210804_212625.jpg20210804_211956.jpg20210804_211857.jpg

Oh Angel welcome Home!
Congratulations and enjoy the puppy love:heart:
How is Shamas handling the new pupster?
I love the photo of Shamas guarding the crate X
Shamas is doing Very well

The puppy is a source of profuse praise for Shamas so he follows me around as I do my little chores. Last night he stood over her while I closed the door because she had run off into the yard during skunk time.

He's growled once or twice...doesn't like her underfoot his belly where the hernia is. Also, the resource guarding is a bit worse than I thought. I've moved all his belongings to a bedroom, but he growled at her for eating her breakfast in her crate. . We removed him from the room entirely.

Probably going to need to employ a behavioral therapist on this point

That's a smart move. I brought in a behaviourist when I first had Squidge (and Willow and Shadow hated her). Even though I was pretty confident in what I was doing, it was a comfort to have someone else confirm everything.
She looks like a cutie, and I'm sure she and Shamas will get along just fine in due course :)
