I hope you got a bit of sleep. Night one is often very up and down with all the changes (although we so often only hear about the ‘perfect first night!’), and you won’t have ruined anything - it just takes time.

Do you need to shut him in a crate? Radical I know - but is it possible to maybe have a small pen or penned off area for safety/containment, and then you can take your time with crate training? I ask because when we had Kipper, advice seemed pretty hard line that you have to keep your puppy in a crate - and he just never liked it although we tried so hard. Now the advice around crates is more varied with plenty of sensible people saying it’s not essential, especially early days. We’ve found it takes the pressure off considerably - Stilton has a crate attached to his pen but the door is always open and everything is a lot less stressful.

Just adding , please dont get yourself in a pickle over crating . I have never used one , just made sure the house is safe and one room I can put them with complete safety if I need to . I know many people use crates and no way am I knocking them at all but some pups get so upset, its not worth it and neither will sleeping beside him cause issues, he is just a baby , bless him xxx

Welcome to the forum Hugo, we're your new online family and are SO happy and excited to meet you!:tail:He is absolutely gorgeous Kelsey, and looks like he's going to grow into a big and Veryvery handsome lad. He's also huge, compared to my GGJ, who weighed 4.5kg at the same age!
As far as the crate goes, it's very early days just now, so I wouldn't worry too much. I'm a big softie and have always kept my new pups right next to my bed, so I can reach out and touch them if they cry in the night. I'm sure as you and Hugo get to know each other you'll find out what works best for both of you. In the meantime enjoy your beautiful boy and keep the photos coming!

What a delectable puppy!!! I love him!!!!

Re crates - I have two diametrically opposed stories. Poppy took to the crate right away and was happy sleeping in it from day 1. Merlin HATED it, and never got used to it. He would fall asleep in it quite happily, but then cry and cry at night. I spent six weeks trying to get it to work, then eventually I gave up. He immediately snuggled down next to Poppy and slept the night through. So... 🤷‍♀️

Hugo is so cute and squishy Kelsey. Definitely a bonnie puppy.

I was lucky with Hunter with his crate. I had all day to get him used to it. Whenever he got tired I put him in it. The first time he whinged for about 5 minutes, rucked up his vetbed then went to sleep. After that only the occasional whinge if he thinks it’s not quite crate time. I used the Dunbar academy first night tips. I’ll put a link incase your interested. I actually did a combination of his suggestions and hers.

Hunter is now four months. I’ve had to loosen his collar and he’s nearly ready for his big crate. I weighed him today because I need to get wormers. He is 15.4kg. He’s averaging just over a kilo a week. They certainly grow quick. Enjoy and have fun.

Thank you everyone for all the great tips! It’s hard to reply to each person individually but just know I appreciate all the words of encouragement and not to stress, and how it may just take time, truly it helps!

Last night ended up being just fine, minus the crate, but that’s ok he slept beautifully beside me on the couch, I was scared to have him on it with me incase he tried to jump off. But he slept beside me on the floor because why would he want to sleep in any of the dog beds I bought for him 😂 I gave a few gentle strokes and said it’s time to sleep and he passed out for three hours, woke up to some whimpering so scooped him up and brought him outside. I placed him on the ground and he didn’t even move, he just squatted to pee and then finished but still didn’t move, he just have been so sleepy lol, scooped him up again with a quiet ‘good pee Hugo! Then put him in the same spot beside the couch, couple more gentle strokes on his chest saying back to sleep, and he slept another 3 hours. Thennn 3:30 he woke up with full blown puppy energy so we played until 5 then he passed out until 730 🥰

He’s absolutely adorable ❤ Is it too soon for him to be teething? Because holy moly he wants to chew everything and you can just see if on his face that it feels oh so good to do so. Poor boy. He’s very gentle when he mouths me though, really hope that continues 😆

He whines loudly and urgently and runs for the door when he has to do a poo, so that’s wonderful. When he has to pee he runs to the door also, and sometimes whines and twice I missed his cues but that’s ok, he was a very good boy and ran to the right spot. Quick tidy up and back to playing!

A couple photos from this morning ❤ I placed him in the crate once he was passed out and he’s stayed, I’ve left the door open for now. He is so adorably clumsy, hence the kibble everywhere 😆
