Have just caught up with this, poor little mite, the abscess must have been very painful. Did the vet have any idea what caused it? I know dogs can have a carnassial abscess, but Joy's sounded different. She should be feeling so much happier now.
Does carnassial refer to the type of abscess? According to her discharge summary Joy had a retrobulbar/pharyngeal abscess but this presumably is referring to the anatomical position of the abscess, rather than the type. Anyway, he wasn't sure what caused it. He couldn't see any foreign bodies on the CT scan but he is still waiting for the report. He said she may have had a puncture wound to the inside of her mouth which became infected, causing the problem. He also remarked on how they had all enjoyed looking after Joy because she's such a sweet natured pretty little labrador. I knew that anyway! She's had a short walk and greeted our neighbour happily but didn't feel up to playing with Ronnie Pug, much to his disappointment. She's lying just behind my chair at present and wags when I talk to her. Pyjamas now, catch the early evening news, which I haven't done since she's been poorly, then....... well,.....perhaps a small celebratory gin and tonic, just so as not to waste the remaining lemon!:giggl:

So so pleased to read this @Candy , it sounds like all's settling down again in your and Joy's world after a horrible period of disruption. Absesses are such odd things; I had one years ago in my jaw from no known cause, a friend had one on her spine (eurgh) that paralysed her for months, again no known cause. Hopefully it's all cleared and now simply recovery and regaining strength for little Joy. WHAT a good girl.
I hope you're already getting outside of that gin and tonic, there's no excuse for wasting lemon! :drink:

My access was very serious I've lost teeth and a piece of jaw, it affected my heart gave me sepsis and left me with high blood pressure. I have permanent nerve damage in my face and I couldn't talk properly for ages. I'm so glad Joys home, I was so worried about her, make sure she gets all her anti biotics and if you see any suggestion of swelling go back to your vet. She may need a long course of anti biotics.

@Candy, a carnassial abscess is one that is in the carnassial tooth area. Poor Joy's sounded really horrible, it does sound like an infection from a puncture wound. What a compliment that the vets etc all enjoyed looking after her.

So sorry to hear about that Swampy and many thanks for the advice. The vet did say she'd need a long course of antibiotics and warn me that it could come back. Lovely to have her snoring at my feet tonight!

OK, just trying to stay awake a bit longer now! There is one tablet that Joy must have every 12 hours. She had one at midnight at the vets last night. When I picked her up from the vets they said not to give her one immediately incase she was sick in the car and that I could gradually alter the times so they fitted into my lifestyle more. Currently my lifestyle fits around Joy. She had a tablet when we got home, about 1-ish. I had been hoping to hold out until midnight or thereabouts to give her the next one. Having spent the last several nights trying desperately to sleep, now I'm trying to stay awake! Do I mind? I have my girl home safely when I thought I might not and will drink black coffee all night, if that's what it takes to get it right! Not too long until 11.30 now, might manage that. Nothing else matters just now, as long as she's safe.:inlove:

Just catching up on the last few days - not what you needed after your holiday! I’m so glad Joy’s back home again and on the mend. I hope you both had a good night and Joy’s soon back to normal.
