Worse than ever this morning, clearly in pain once the Methadone wore off. Shaking, slavering, counted her resps at 58 per minute, not sure what it should be in dogs but it seemed fast. Also a swollen left eye. Back to emergency vets again. Lovely vet, she was very interested in the swollen eye, she said that it could be an abcess behind her eye, which would explain the jaw pain. She's had an antibiotic injection and more Methadone. Asked if I'd like them to keep her in, to which I said yes, as she now hasn't eaten in over 36 hours and was also refusing to drink. There was also a vet nurse there today who had a lot to do with Solstice when she had her cruciate ligament repair and she was absolutely lovely with her, also remembered me and was sad to hear we'd lost Sol, said she'd been very fond of her. She promised to give Joy the best care ever, so that was reassuring, but I still feel sick with worry. That little dog's been what's kept me going lately. Can ring the vet in 10 minutes to find out how she's doing.

@Candy this is hideous for you and Joy, but she's absolutely in the best place and as her symptoms have moved on hopefully this gives more of an indication - the swollen eye is definitely a pointer. I know with abcesses they can give dramatic symptoms and hurt like billy-o, but they can improve very quickly too. Sending you massive hugs and good wishes - keep us posted, and keep looking after yourself xxx

Just spoken to the vet. Joy's more comfortable now that she's had the pain relief and they have managed to syringe 40mls of water into her mouth which she didn't like but did swallow. They're trying to avoid having to put her on a drip. They're just cooking some chicken for her to see if they can tempt her to eat and clearly understood and agreed when I said I felt she had become frightened of eating because of the pain. I've been advised to ring back around 4pm for an update. These vets were great with Solstice and all the ones I've met have been incredibly kind and caring to owners as well as animals ,so I know Joy's in good hands. Just can't think what I'm going to do with the next four hours.

Well done @Candy, you're doing brilliantly and hopefully Joy will settle a bit with the pain relief and maybe start taking some more water and food. Do you have a friend you can visit for a couple of hours? Otherwise I wonder if just something physical to keep you active might be useful, like a good hoovering session or cleaning windows/bathrooms... Silly I know, but I can just imagine what I'd be like and doing something with my hands would probably help x

That's really good to hear, what a nice vet :) Keeping everything crossed that Joy will be out and eating chicken with you by this evening.

I'm glad you've got such a good vet who is thinking of you as well as taking good care of Joy. Can they suggest any actual treatment apart from the antibiotics and pain killers? It's so horrible for you to have to go through this.

Oh @Candy, you really don't need this at the moment do you, so sorry to hear about Joy, sounds really scary. This probably won't make you feel any better, but just to share our experience of Monty having an abscess, it came on really quickly as a golf ball sized lump in his neck, and our vet drained it the next day. Afterwards Monty perked up really quickly and was back to his usual self in just a few days. I know that's not definitely what it is with GGJ but hope you hear some more positive news soon.

Just realised, you're a nurse..... You know all about abscesses of course:facepalm:
