Merlin hurt

Poor Merly, he can't put any weight on his hind left leg this morning. :( We've been to the vet's, strong painkillers and a week's strict rest prescribed. Vet isn't sure if it's coming from his hips, he also said there was a slight instability in that knee. So no more beach walks for Merlin this holiday... instead it's strict rest.

Yesterday we didn't even go to the beach, as it was Sunday and my son was visiting; we just did little local walks, no charging around. Then this morning, out of the blue, he can't put any weight on his back leg. He was clearly in a lot of pain - just dopy now after the vet gave him an injection.

There simply is no end to the worry. Once we get back to Germany I think we are going to have to have CT scans done of his back end.

Oh Karen, I am so sorry, poor Merlin just can't get a break :( I think you do right to have the CT scans done, if nothing else it will clear this up and put your mind at rest. I hope the rest helps Merlin. Lots of love to you and big hugs for Merly from us xxxx

Oh that’s so rough - you poor thing, and dear Merlin. Hope the pain improves quickly and good luck with further investigations xx

He's lying in the garden, a bit dopey and sleepy, best thing for him really. Poor boy, I feel so sorry for him - and so worried about the future.

Poor Merlin and poor you. That's really unfortunate, particularly as he hadn't been charging around. I hope the scans help you get to the root of the problem once you're back in Germany.

Don't worry Karen his future is bright, his future is Mellow Yellow because he has you. These things always seem to happen at the worse time, although there never is a good time, but on holiday is particularly rubbish. In a few days you'll be trying to keep him quiet and stop him dashing about because he'll be feeling right as rain I'm sure. More worry for you of course but improvement for Merlin. If you get the scan done when you get home you will know exactly what you are dealing with. It may or may not be as bad as you think but I find knowing is a lot less worrying than wondering. I hope you can all enjoy the rest of your holiday even if it is enforced R&R xx

Thank you Jen, that's just what I need to hear... :) Yes, I'm sure he will recover from this, and I'm just hoping that the scan will then give us more clarity. We know the situation with his hips; I assume that what has happened is that we were seduced by his happiness and general well-being on the beach into letting him do more than he normally would... Maybe he hurt himself a bit in that leap off the sea defence, who knows? Or maybe there is something else, some nerve damage or similar. And although we only had the dummies with us on the beach for the first two days, perhaps he did too much... I don't mind about this happening while I am on holiday, at least I can look after him properly. Sigh.

We'll still be going to the beach, but only one of us at a time with Poppy - the other one will stay with Merlin. Luckily the cottage we are staying in is lovely, with a sweet garden, and the weather is good! I'm getting lots of reading done...

You'll be fighting over who gets to stay at the cottage with Merlin and relax in the garden with some shade. :unsure:Ok maybe not but a lovely holiday not spoilt just different. :)

Poor Merlin. I am so sorry Karen and hope that all will turn out well for you all.

I am sorry, poor Merlin. Rourke has taken to hanging his left hind leg when he gets up in the evening. vet doesn't think it is hip, could be a ligament, we have tried no retrieving and resting, but no difference. I will be interested to see if you do have a CT scan and if it reveals a problem.
