New Harness

Pepper has suddenly taken a serious dislike to his harness and we’re not sure why.
This happened with Kipper- nothing we can think of, one day he just said he hated it. We got a new harness (the K9) which is a bit better; the last one was quite tight over the head then had to step through the front leg, quite awkward. But he’s still not a fan, so we have to pop his collar on then either put his harness on in the back of the car (absolutely fine) or at the back gate. I’m trying to desensitise it (reintroducing gradually in various environments with lots of treats & reassurance) but still got to use it on walks. Hoping the new harness will help (more lightweight, nothing over the head). Can you think of anything specific that put Pepper off?

Can’t think of anything specific so will have to continue desensitisation as you are. He’s now got a Perfect Fit Harness so doesn’t have to put his head through it but that doesn’t seem to help so we’ll just have to be patient.

I think he’s read this thread and seen all the lovely new ones he could have.
I must admit I do like the look of the Copenhagen harness and they do it in Orange too!

Think we’ll wait until he’s grown a little bit more as he’s towards the upper end of the size range for the Medium so it wouldn’t last that long.

Once he’ll fit into a Large then I think we’ll get one!

I taught Luna to walk loose leash without having her on leash much at all! I think it's the best way to teach loose lead walking because you can't use negative punishment when your pup isn't attached to you. It removes frustration and just makes it into the most wonderful game. Most people teach heel walking off lead only once they've conquered it on lead; I think that's back to front. Start off lead, make being with you the most rewarding thing in the world and when you put a leash on, it'll be a piece of cake :)

I did some sort of thing with Homer, he was better off lead with a steady supply of treats, when younger, probably still is especially if I vary the pace, we play little games sometimes. On lead he still likes to be in front of me. My bad training is that heal means to come around behind me to my left hand side so walking on lead is often walking in lots of circles. He’s better on lead with Hubby.

Harness for holidays, unfamiliar or unpredictable territory, to be on the safe side.

I think we’ll work on the off lead approach with Pepper. And also vary what we do on our walks. We’ve been so focused on recall, which is now, dare I say good, that we’ve probably become a little too predictable!

At classes last night he was much better when we swapped his harness for just his collar. That’s fine except we @JES72 says harnesses are needed for new places.

Where can I buy the perfect fit harness?? I have the K-9 and Hunter now backs out to wear it. He has ED and I think it is rubbing him? Any other recommendations for Harnesses are welcome. I have a chocco/puberty/hormone driven crazy male Labrador at the moment. He pulled me over this morning chasing a "stealth" pigeon . Plus Hunter refuses to sit on command today, ignores recall and will not even look at me!! :mmm:

We have the Copenhagen one. I like it but wish it had a clip for around the neck because Baxter has a huge head and i find i have to loosen it to get it over his head then readjust it again. Saying that i like it a lot. He can't get out of it, like previous poster we had a K9 and he learnt to back out of it. I like handle and choice of clip. He walks well with it using front clip. :pull:

I am resurrecting this thread rather than starting a new one as I am considering a harness for Lilly.
With age she has developed a bit of a floppy larynx (snores worse and can have coughing boits) but with Oreo here she also has a bit of a "I want to be out front" attitude which isn't really compatible with the "Mum dragging on behind" reality when on a long lead in strange places.
I don't think I would use a front ring for fear of gait change, so just need a back fastener.
Is the Haquihana or the Copenhagen (Air probably but not disregarded something more padded) still featuring highly in all your opinions?

Monty still wears the Copenhagen every day, I think it's excellent, it is looking slightly worn now but I still love the handle, though I don't use the front ring either. As soon as Bear is close to fully grown, I will buy another. Not getting one now as they are too expensive for just a few months wear.

Toffee still fits Ripple's puppy Perfect Fit, which for him is a nice soft, light harness. Ripple is in the Copenhagen, it’s pretty hefty compared to the Perfect Fit but suits his size and strength.
As Lilly is quite petite I would have thought the Perfect Fit should work ok, I guess it’s a matter of personal preference.

@Jacqui-S I have that Copenhagen one that you are welcome to have. Baxter's head is too big and i got fed up constantly having to adjust the neck to get it on him. It's a large x
