Persistent diarrhea

Good luck with the new food. I concluded with Red that it was chicken and grains that upset her. I totally avoid them. Turkey is a good protein as is fish. I understand duck is too although Red has never had that
I found a good food which contained tripe. Rory can eat tripe until it comes out of ears he loves his tripe and trout food. There's loads of good foods out there, sites to compare ingredients too, so you might find a cheaper food with the same ingredients. You can also search for your new food at a cheaper price. Lots of companies do multi deals and have coupons on site. Have you looked on any food comparison sites? They are great for finding smaller companies which often have good food. The food I use is expensive but it suits both dogs and I can feed less. I found I have less vet visits for Rory and it's much cheaper than a vet prescription diet. I hope things do settle and he's back to normal soon.
I’ll have to look at a comparison site! This food after you buy 12 bags you do get one bag free, so that helps. But I’ll keep looking and see what other kind of deals or coupons I can find!

Well, night number one, he didn’t wake up to poop at all, so I feel that preprobiotic is doing it’s job as I’m sure it is too soon for the food to have helped, he only had a half cup of the new food total yesterday too.

This morning after breakfast he had a big poo, but it was soft formed so that was great. Then he had a second poo, half was soft formed and the other half was cow pie like but least not water! So, so far I feel that’s good progress… we shall see how this continues to go 🤞

Harley had loads of issues with her tummy when she was younger. She doesn’t get on with any kind of kibble so is on wet food.
We found giving her prokolin paste for 3-4 days at a time really helped.
White fish was also a winner and helped.
Hope his tummy settles soon.

Thank you everyone for your own stories and suggestions. After driving back and fourth and chatting at a few different places for three hours 😳 I’ve leaned more on that it is likely a protein allergy to chicken. I have decided to go with Now Fresh, grain free large breed puppy. The hardest part was trying to find large breed puppy food that didn’t have chicken in it. So this one the protein is Turkey, duck and salmon, and just happens to be grain free. It is super expensive… but if it works I’ll be so happy! Also got a better pre probiotic than what we had, it has slippery elm in it and is supposed to help the stomach lining/inflammation, and sooth the tummy. Really hope in a few days he’s feeling better!
Simba’s food is Performatin Ultra - Large Breed. It is grain-free and has the turkey/salmon combo. You can get it at PetValu. Just mentioning it in case you want to compare prices.

Has Hugo had a test for Giardia?
He hasn’t been but that being said, he was put on antibiotics twice for what they use to treat Giardia. But if this continues another 24 hours I will bring a stool sample in! I just really don’t think this is it as he shows zero signs of it otherwise. He’s happy and playful and devours food and drinks normally, no sore tummy etc. You truly would have no idea he had a squirty bum based on how normal he is otherwise!

Thank you, this one is my second option, I actually would have preferred it but they only came in small bags so I opted to try Now Fresh first and see.

3 soft solid poops today :monkey:

Not sure if it is just the pre probiotics or combo with the food that’s helping. For those who did food transitions with allergies/intolerances did you notice improvement within three days of doing the transition? Or did it take longer…? I just thought it would take until at least 90% new food 10% old food.

Meg has been on probiotic Yudigest ever since we had a rubbishy consultation with the vet over her being sick a lot - this was during Covid, so that long ago. It contained the same bacteria as the VeryExpensivePaste they sold us when they were just guessing (they didn't even examine her!). After a lot more sick and experimentation it came down to her needing her kibble soaked before eating. That simple. I was reluctant to stop the Yudigest in case that was helping - Like you said, you never know. A couple of weeks ago I bit the bullet and stopped the probiotic. She's been fine since, touch wood.

She's also intolerant to a couple of things, it's so difficult when you're trying to pin things down.

I’m glad she did well coming off of the probiotic, that gives me hope. It really is difficult to pin down what the issue is when trying to figure things out.

@Kelsey&Axel I’m just catching up Kelsey. I’m sorry Hugo has had a bad tummy again. From my experience with Murphy and then Scott and Scout who all had sensitive stomachs a novel protein, as has been discussed, is best. I always used a food with fish protein. Murphy had to have white fish salmon was too rich. I also had them on probiotics permanently. They won’t do any harm. S&S we’re on them from about four months old when they had to have antibiotics for six weeks. The vet recommended it to avoid antibiotic tummy. If the diarrhoea flares up again and you take a sample for testing have they tested for campylobacter yet ? If not ask them to. Scout had campylobacter (seriously what didn’t those dogs have 😏) . If I remember correctly the bug multiplies in the gut, they have diarrhoea which reduces the bug in the gut, they improve for a bit, then it repeats. Hopefully though the change in food and probiotics have done the trick 🤞
