Pet Insurance

Petplan have now sent through my insurance renewal quote - an increase of nearly £650 on last year to over £3400 for both dogs. So I've spent the morning sorting out a new insurer and have even saved £450 on last year's price. The quote is like for like - same cover, same excesses, etc. It's still a lot to pay, but I can't risk not insuring them after all this time. Petplan didn't even offer to look at the renewal quote again when I phoned to cancel.

I suspect a lot of people will leave them soon. What company did you use? I can't stop Rory's but I may change Ivers and the next dogs. What I object to is how they won't offer less on the insurance because I don't need a lot of the things they offer

We are on Direct line advanced, its over £200 a month but we get £8000 per condition. He's had three different conditions so far this year! We got to £8000 for his spleen op and ICU care, £6000 for the adrenal glad op and are up to about £2000 on the megaoesophagus. So getting our money back.

Insuring 2 dogs would be eye watering!

I pay £986 a year for Rourke with Pet Plan. You probably have a higher premium as you live in an affluent area and vets fees are higher? I have certainly had my money's worth. £3400 does sound a lot of money! I agree, we cannot risk not insuring them. Pet Plan have never argued and always paid up straight away. However, I am only insured for £4,000 and now have to pay some of the claim.

Yes, I think so - London and the South East are apparently the most expensive areas for pet insurance. Pet Plan has been very good for mine when I’ve had a couple of claims in the past, but the cost has really escalated.

I’ve gone with John Lewis, as my car insurance is cheapest through them. Each dog is for up to £7500 vet fees, with £100 excess + 20% on all vet bills because they are both over 9. Pet Plan‘s renewal was for £7000 for each dog, with £135 excess + 20% of all bills. I didn’t look at any others, as I was so relieved to get a much lower quote! It was also walk time (and lunchtime) by the time I had sorted it!

I’m a tad miffed to say the least and I will be contacting Tesco pet insurance tomorrow. I received Hunter‘s renewal with Tesco pet insurance today. Last year I paid £343 for lifetime cover £10,000 vet fees. This year his renewal has gone up to £484 !!! I expected it to go up it always does and intended to contact Tesco to see if they could reduce it, they usual do a bit. However I just thought I’d go on compare the market and see what Tesco are charging new customers this year. £240 !!! :wtf: How does that work ?!?! It‘ll be interesting to hear their explanation :hmm:

When we first took out Ella's insurance it was $41 per month.

Last year it was up to $81 per month and we just had our renewal and it's jumped to $105 per month 😱. That's a 30% increase. Criminal.
Oh, so MAJOR stuff up in my post above. Switch the word MONTH for FORTNIGHT 😱
$105 per fortnight or $2,740 per year.

Might be time to scrap the insurance and just keep the savings set aside.

I pay 450 euro's per year. I get 80 % covered with max 6000 euro per year. Hunter's knee operation cost 2500 euros. His other 2 elbow operations were also 1200 euros each. So relieved I insured 8 weeks old Hunter! OH said I was over the top insuring a puppy!
I think @Emily that your pet insurance is pure extortion! I don't know how big your pet bills are and the costs of medication but maybe saving money and keeping it aside may be a better option?
@Jennifer it doesn't seem fair but when I first started we got a big introduction discount. I can't change companies now because his ED was diagnosed. Other insurers will not cover arthritis or elbow pain related bills. Some won't even insure me. I do hope Tesco will reduce it due to your loyalty and give a good explanation.
I think the increases are crazy however medication prizes have risen by 20%. For me personally insurance has been a very wise investment.

It’s insane isn’t it. We paid £25 for Stanley initially and now it’s £91. And I’ve claimed once for some lump removals which cost approx £500.

I know our luck though and I’d cancel it and he’d injure himself 🥴
