@Jelinga CSJ now do a turmeric tincture which saves making your own turmeric paste. I've read in other articles about turmeric that the black pepper, which is in this tincture, helps with absorption. TurmerTinc Herbal Tincture 250ml Joint Aid also contains the active ingredient from turmeric curcumin. I've seen some very impressive results with Joint Aid in more than one fog and give it my two as a preventative. My friend's Rottie as an example was diagnosed with arthritis in her hocks when she was two. At about five years old she had difficulty with steps, jumping up on things, getting comfortable lying down and a permanent limp. The limp improved massively with the Joint Aid, she no longer had a problem getting into a lying down position and managed steps easily. Joint Aid for Dogs - From £9.06

Black pepper actually helps with keeping the active ingredient in the blood for longer because piperine, the active ingredient in black pepper, inhibits the liver enzyme that breaks down foreign substances in the blood. Piperine is very sensitive to heat, so it’s best to add the freshly cracked black pepper to the paste after the paste has cooled down.

Oil helps in the absorption. Hence why you add oil to the paste. Apparently it can be any oil; doesn’t have to be coconut oil. Probably better to use an oil high in omega 3, which is also beneficial to joints and inflammation.

The golden paste really helps Hunter's swelling in his elbows. I also use Synopet twice a year as a change to the golden paste (and golden poohs!).
The golden paste is really easy to make ( I also freeze part of it as one batch is quite alot). Also use good quality(organic) turmeric if you and use soapy water to remove the yellow stains from your fingers!

Thanks will order some from CSJ if it saves me making it. I have tried Joint Aid but unfortunately it didn't help.

Yes. Our vet recommended paracetamol for Snowie when his back flares up. We give one tablet—I think that’s 500mg. He weighs 35kg. It knocks him out and makes him very sleepy. Our vet said it’s good for neural pain—pain caused by pinched nerves (he has a slipped disc). I’m not sure how it affects pain caused by arthritis. With Snowie, he’s as right as rain about 6 hours after taking paracetamol and after having a good sleep. It looks like it relaxes him a lot.

Paracetamol in high doses is dangerous. 50 tablets taken at once can kill a human. Did your vet provide guidance for how much you can give Rourke?

Yes, Monty has it occasionally for joint pain as recommended by our Ortho vet. Our dose is half a human tablet 3 times a day, which can be increased to three quarters of a tablet three times a day, he's 29 to 30 kilos.

I don't know anything about this, but I can really recommend CSJ as a supplier - all Pongo's food and treats come from them, they are very reliable, helpful and good value.

If you can make the turmeric paste yourself, whole food is always better than refined supplements—often compounds need to work together, and supplements isolate ingredients. I realize it feels like an extra chore to make, but it actually isn’t that difficult at all. It’s like making a curry sauce!

The vet said half a 500 tablet twice a day, but I am worried it will upset Rourke's stomach again. How may times do you have to use it, I don't mean the tree times a day, but the frequency when he occasionally has t take it?

What make did you get Kate? And where from? Wouldn’t mind giving it a try for my hip. A painless night’s sleep would be blissful 🛏 😴 💤 .

Because Monty is on rheumocam(meloxicam) every day, the paracetamol is just a top up, but we have done it for 3 days in a row before, though generally only a few times a month now
