The Labraventures of Carb贸n, Spanish (ex-) foster dog extraordinaire

We arrived safe and mostly sound night before last. Carbon had a bit of a tough time on the flight and made a valiant attempt to spend both take off and landing in my lap. I think he now associates 'regular' seats (vs the extra legroom seats we had on two of the other flights) with the very turbulent flight we had last trip between Denver and San Jose. Lufthansa did an amazing job getting us next to the the only empty seat on the flight this time around, but it did not have extra legroom because I changed my tickets at the last minute. The smaller space was hard for him.

However as soon as we landed and especially as soon as he saw "Cookie Man" (my father) he was all sunshine and happiness. Carbon simply does not hold on to fear or bad moments. He's doing fine now and loving being back here.

We visited Donna at the hospital yesterday and then in the evening she was moved back to her house. Though still a hospice patient, she is feeling a lot better than a few days ago thanks to a new IV cocktail of fluids and vitamins. Her granddaughters were visiting night before last and showed us a video they'd taken of Donna dancing with them, IV pole and all. Donna is an avid dancer and it looks like she's passed it on to the next generation. It was great to see her in such good spirits.

Yesterday evening after she was settled at home, she asked Carbon to come up on her in-home hospital bed. Despite it being way past his dinner and in a new place with new people, he hopped right on up, tucked himself against her legs and lay his head gently on her hip. Donna just said, "THAT'S what I needed." I was so proud of him. My friend Mimi used to call Brogan, "Dr. Brogan" when I was going through cancer treatment and last night Carbon officially earned his M.D. as well. He is an amazing dog.

And then he came home to my Dad's where he ate his own poo which I then had to painstakingly brush out of his teeth before I could stand going to bed with him.

Ah well, even furry angels have their bad habits, eh?

Didn't we tell you how wonderful Labbydogs are? Huh? Huh? How you doubted us at times!
Me? Never! :wasntme:

The poo eating? Meh, two of mine have chowed down on human poo this week, so count your blessings.
Oh, Carbon does that too when he can find it. Human poo is the FINEST vintage!

Eating his own poo is new, though. I guess mainly because I usually pick it up as soon as it hits the ground so he doesn't get the chance. Since here there is another person (my dad) who can let him out into the garden, it's a bit harder to police. That's ok, though. Carbon enjoys the eating and my dad seems to find it pretty funny, so there's value in a good laugh. And bonus: Carbon goes to bed with sparkling teeth and fresh breath.

I just have to bleach my brain of the actual teeth cleaning process. :tmi:

These dogs are nurses and doctors rolled into one.
I have to agree. Even when he is full of energy, if I am really low he just sticks with me and stays calm. If I'm on the mend, however, I get harassed to play or go outside, which is also very wise when you think of it! :)

Just wait till he sicks it up again... I hope he doesn鈥檛 put you through that! :poo::smiledog:
Oh yes, already did that on the drive from @RosieC 's in Kinsale to the ferry in Rosslare. His own recycled poo and crabs he ate off the beach. Delightful. Luckily everything has been staying down nicely this time around.

Glad you made it there ok! Sorry Carbon had a rough time, though... will it be extra legroom seats from now on or will you try to get him ok with the smaller space?

Glad he (and you, of course) could be there for Donna and your dad. Any fire worries where you are at? From here it seems like the whole state is aflame :(
