It was a big day for Team Carbon. First we visited Pembroke Castle. With it still being half term, there were a lot of wild children and a few wild dogs around too. Carbon thought the castle keep had the best smelling grass EVER. I don't know what was in that grass but it was all I could do to get his nose up off the ground for a few seconds at a time. We enjoyed wandering around the few bits of the castle that didn't involve narrow spiral staircases...which was most of it unfortunately so the charms of the interior went mainly unseen. However there was a beautiful walk around the outside of the castle walls and that made up for it.
When we were leaving the castle, a group of boys leaned over a wall and shouted "We like your dog!". How nice, I thought. Then they shouted, "Is he a gay dog?". Mmmm, I thought, that is a bit odd. Only after walking another few minutes did I realise that they'd said, "Is he a GUIDE dog?".
The Welsh accent is proving a bit challenging for me.
We then headed to West Angle beach and a short but picturesque walk along the Pembroke coastal path. We met a very friendly group of older people who again, I really didn't understand. I smiled and nodded a lot and they seemed happy with that.
Finally it was on to Tenby. I've got to be honest, Llanelli and the smaller villages I've seen so far here in Wales are pretty grim. Tenby was a huge surprise with its happy rainbow colours, beautiful coastline and twisty little streets. We had a good wander and Carbon flirted with some local dogs on the harbour. One man walking with his wife and their two dogs asked me if I had any "sweeties". That was a new one. Apparently that's a term for dog treats in these parts?
Again, smile and nod, smile and nod.
It's been a good little mini intro to Wales and tomorrow it's back to Beanwood with a Very Important Stop to Play with Pongo. Carbon is all rested up, so Pongo and the Beanwood gang better be ready!
(Hopefully photos coming of today at some point - got some good ones to post but too sleepy now...
