You do find some interesting places!
The crack house apartment building with cockroaches owned by the Russian mafia in Cannes is the standard by which all others are judged. And I was stuck there for five weeks because I paid up front and they made me leave a EUR500 cash deposit.

This place is heaven in comparison. Just thinking about the Cannes cockroach den makes me feel much happier about this place. Whew, all better now...attitude adjustment accomplished!

Edit: to be fair I'm not SURE it was the Russian mafia. The scary woman who took my money could have been just a freelancer. ;)

Oh my goodness - you take your chances with Airbnb, don’t you?

My brother and sister booked one in New York. It said ‘views of Manhattan across the harbour’ and pictured the views. The only thing is - the flat had no windows! The light for the apartments came from skylights. The views were from the street.

Only two more nights @Emily_Babbelhund :)

OK, that's pretty bad! I've actually had pretty good luck with Airbnb, though I still resent them for pretty much monopolising the holiday rental market. I knew this place in Newhaven would likely be dodgy, but it was the best of several poor options.

Hey, you are always back here you know!
Be careful what you say: if it wasn't for the fact that I'd been on the road yesterday from 10am to 8:30pm, I may have just driven right back up to Bristol! :ROFLMAO:

Many thanks to lovely @Joy and frisky Molly for a beautiful sunny walk along the cliffs this morning in Newhaven! Joy has an amazing walk just steps from her front door and both Carbon and Molly had fun running through the long grass.

It has been a year ago this week since I first met Joy and Molly walking with @kateincornwall , Nelly and Carbon at Golitha Falls in Cornwall.

I know Kate remembers The Sheep Leg incident from that walk particularly well. :giggl:

While I'd like to say that it was fun to show Joy how far Carbon's come in that time, he was a bit of a hooligan today. He ran up to a farmhouse and their (luckily) very friendly dog and then was casing the joint on how to break into their kitchen. Of course I was screaming his name like a banshee, which of course is NOT one of his trained recall cues and was totally pointless except for making me look like a loon in front of Joy and the farmer. Sigh.

Wait? Did I say Carbon was the hooligan? Sounds more like I was the culprit! Mmmm... :wasntme:

After our walk, we had a nice chat at Joy's where Carbon invited himself up on her sofa (where's my polite boy who asks first??) and joined Molly in barking at seagulls. When Molly started pawing at the refrigerator door (genius move in my opinion), it was time for us to leave the girls in peace.

Carbon and I then headed down to Brighton Marina, where my friend from...well...not sure how to describe her. I ran into her nine years ago in Cannes while I was walking Brogan. Her dog Dexter tried to murder Brogan and a good friendship was born. Gilly used to drive me to the beach with her three dogs in her leaky car (the roof had a rust hole in it) and Brogan in the back while Dexter glared daggers at him. I was never quite sure if Brogan was entirely safe back there but luckily Gilly's car didn't make it far so the homicidal opportunity window was always blessedly short.

In the nine years since, Gilly moved to San Francisco (where I visited her three times), then last fall back to Antibes (where I visited her last October) and then Brexit uncertainty forced her to Brighton two months ago where she's currently in exile and trying to figure out how to get back to France.

Though Dexter has long gone to the great doggie beyond, her two Turkish street dog girls, Chloe and Pickle, are going gangbusters. I swear they've not changed a jot since I first met them. Pickle's real name isn't Pickle, but as she has a dodgy backend and is always in a pickle that is the only name I know her by. Her real name is something elegant like Penelope. It doesn't fit a funny little thing who sometimes just gets stuck with her legs folded up under her and has to be set back up like a wind up toy dog that's fallen over. So...Pickle.

Despite the beautiful morning with Joy, once I got to Brighton it rained and rained and rained. Three rescue dogs who hate the Wet from Above were not having it when it came to a walk so we stayed in and talked way too much until I finally drove away six hours later with a hoarse voice and a VERY hungry and disgruntled Carbon.

"I am so very hungry and this silly Mama Lady does NOT respect the sanctity of my meal time! Pfft!!!" - Carbon

A lovely day was unfortunately ended by me driving in circles trying to find a tiny street space into which I could squeeze my TARDIS. I've ended up a good five minute walk away and if possible in an even worse street than before. At least Joy - as an official local - confirmed my feeling that this street is dodgy so I feel a little vindicated instead of just being a paranoid American.

And so once again, all hail the power of the lambies to keep my car windows intact overnight! :cancan:

Oh crikey @Emily_Babbelhund your post was exhausting to read so you must be exhausted - all that driving, dodgy Air BnB etc. How lovely though to see @Joy and Molly and your friend in Brighton. I would imagine if Carbón is spending long periods of time in the car, it’s understandable if he goes a bit mad when he has the chance. Hope you had a good night and you have a good day today and your Tardis is ok

It was a little stream of consciousness as I wrote so late last night, sorry about that! I re-read it this morning and couldn't hardly make sense of it myself!

The Airbnb is the gift that keeps on giving. More cat poo in the garden this morning (it's simply the neighbourhood toilet, that's quite clear). Then I tried opening the oven to use it and the door flopped open never to be closed again. After I saw the state of the oven I wouldn't have used it anyway but now I've had to gerryrig it closed with a bin bag. I can only hope they won't try to charge me for it. Despite the nice thing @Jelinga said about me being optimistic, I have to admit that I HATE THIS PLACE - not Newhaven, just the house.

I don't think it's the car, I think it's me. When I'm unsettled or stressed, so is he. If he doesn't get his zen back in France he hopefully will in Regensburg. :)

Hope you have a bit of sunshine to end your last few days to "haste ye back" to the UK.
Grey and dark at the moment, but let's hope some of your sun comes down this way!

When do you set off for France Emily?
Tomorrow morning. :)

Can't you leave a note saying the oven door was broken when you arrived. Then take photos?
I messaged the host on the Airbnb platform as soon as it happened. He's already messaged me back and said it was already broken (duh) and not to worry about it. At least he seems an honest guy, if not a great housekeeper.

Interestingly he's also asked me to leave the keys inside the house tomorrow morning when I leave, which means leaving the front door unlocked. That seems a bit off to me, but I'm just going to make my escape and not worry about it!

Shall we come and rescue you ?
Yes, please?

No, it's fine. You know I've been really spoiled these last months - even though I moved a lot in Cornwall the Big House and the Cottage were both lovely and I was lucky to have such a nice landlady. Also got lucky with the beautiful cottage in Wales. I was due a clunker.

I think part of my grumpiness is that I'm missing Cornwall. SE England is not my bag. It's beautiful in its own way and I'm so glad I got to meet up with @Joy and Molly and my friend from France, but there are just too many people here for my liking. I've become a HERMIT!
