It's just awful. We have been lucky so far in Melbourne as we've only had a few days of smoke.

I can't get over the 3,000+ people that are currently stranded on the beach in Mallacoota. They're looking at trying to get 1,000 onto a Navy ship tomorrow, which will take 16 hours to get them to the next Navy port.

I know this video is doing the rounds on social media but it's just terrifying to watch

Terrifying, what brave men to be fighting these dreadful fires. I worry about the future, where will all these poor people go, where will they get money to live on, how can they re-build their lives. It is the most dreadful situation and I am not sure the rest of the world realise the seriousness of it.

They are in the tourist 'leave zone' which means anyone not a resident has been told to leave by Saturday. It is a very large zone that stretches for 180km. As residents it's their choice to leave - it's not an evacuation at this point. There is a route open from Pambula through to Canberra, via Cooma. The police are managing the traffic flow which, as you can imagine, is very heavy.

I am not at risk from fire, personally (smoke inhalation is another story!). The fires may reach Canberra but will hit the western side. I’m on the eastern side. To the west of Canberra it’s mountainous National Park with a big fire steadily increasing.

East of Canberra. This is the south coast of NSW. Black = burnt. To give an idea of size, it takes an hour to drive from Canberra north to Goulburn on a freeway.

West of Canberra. It’s not beyond possible that most of what’s green here is at risk.

Around Sydney. Sydney is much bigger than London (area not population).

And on it goes further north. Also eastern Victoria is burning, and around Adelaide (South Australia). It’s really beyond comprehension. These fires can’t be put out by human effort. Too big and hot, and also no access. They’ll stop when it rains or when they run out of fuel.

Thanks for the updates, @Oberon. It’s horrendous. I hope the forecast rain comes on Monday (with lower temperatures, too, just for a day or two, but meanwhile the predictions for the weekend are grim. It’s difficult to imagine an air index rating of 3,463 when over 200 is hazardous. Thinking of you.

How awful for everyone in Australia, but especially those whose lives are being directly impacted 😢. I really hope the rain comes soon.

I feel for the people who are or have been directly in harm’s way. And all the people working so terribly hard - mainly firefighters (mostly these are volunteers), but also wildlife carers, police etc etc. What a lot of them have seen will be traumatising. And all the native animals and millions of hectares of habitat lost.... This is a disaster for the world, not just Australia.
