    What made you smile today?

I made contact yesterday with someone in the same stages of setting up her business as I am. I'm no good at that sort of thing either, but sometimes it's good to push yourself. It'll either work out great and you'll make a long-term relationship that benefits you all, or else you'll spend a...

    What made you smile today?

Trigger warning: dog abuse. Left outside in the cold (20C) for HOURS (5 minutes with a kibble scatter) with NO WAY of getting back in (except through the open door). PS the door does move. Just fine.

    Back to agility

Quick update: Shadow is back fighting fit after his week off. I took Willow while I was resting Shadow and she LOVED it. The instructors love her, too. She's nowhere near as interested in the people as Shadow is, she just wants to GOGOGO and everyone thinks she's "un poco loca" but that she...

The Labraventures of Carbón, Spanish (ex-) foster dog extraordinaire

That's how Bella sleeps 99% of the time, except her chest will actually be on the floor in the opposite direction to her back legs - imagine Carbón's chest pushed down to the ground on the left. It's amazing how much she can twist her spine. We call it her pretzel pose.

first Heat-what do I need to know?

Sounds sensible, and I wouldn't, under any circumstances, leave her unsupervised in the garden, however strong the fence. Luna appeared totally unchanged behaviourally during her seasons, but Ginny turns into a complete flirt and pesters poor Shadow. Squidge was really messy during hers. She...

    Crufts

Well, the judges obviously thought it was and I'd suggest they have a little more breed experience than either of us! ;) I think we both need to take a moment to appreciate how good life obviously is if this is worth getting one's knickers in a twist over.

    Back to agility

It varies so much between countries and between venues in the country as to what counts towards points and titles. I was talking to friends in the US tonight and their venues are very different. From what I understand, here to graduate from grade 1 to grade 2, you only need three clean runs. But...

Why would the coat get too wet to swim just because it’s been poofed up with back-combing? And why could it not swim the next day, when it’s not been coiffed the same way? “Fit for function” is not determined by a hair cut.

    Back to agility

There’s no goal, just to spend time with Shads doing something he enjoys. Having him spend time in the company of other dogs is a huge benefit, too. As for competition, we may or may not end up trialling. If we do, we’re not likely to progress very far simply because he’s not a border collie! 😁

    Back to agility

We went to a trial today and competed in “pre agility” which is a chance to compete before it gets serious, only for novice dogs. It’s only jumps and tunnels, and is supposed to just be fun. Well, it was a learning curve! 😆 We had two courses to run. The first was quite turny and complicated...

    Crufts

Right. So. One of the earlier comments (and a frequently seen theme) us about how conformation people are “catty” and “bitchy”. My question is, how is this different? Casting aspersions because you don’t understand and like the accessories or cuts that you see presented? That you say they can’t...

Why so? I'm afraid that doesn't stand up to scrutiny if you really think about it. There is nothing to suggest that the dog isn't fit for function.

    Sleeping arrangements

My approach would be to spend a couple of weeks never closing the crate door. Feed him in the crate, sneak lots of surprise tasty snacks in there without him noticing so he starts thinking of it as a magical place where good stuff appears. Don't coax or lure him, keep the ball in his court as...

    Sleeping arrangements

Two thoughts. 1. He won't "calm down". He may give up when he's exhausted. That may be after barking all day. But "calm down", nope. He's more likely to work himself up to a greater state of distress. Imagine yourself being trapped somewhere you don't want to be. Would it get better over the...

    Crufts

Of course, in the show ring, the styling is often over-exaggerated. But this is a beauty contest, and the same thing happens with all breeds in different ways. It's nowhere near as ridiculous as what you see on the human catwalk :D

The poodle cut is functional. As a water dog, it is often shaved to help its movement through the water, except for areas that needed to be kept warm.

My Labrador Friends Book Club - Fiction Choice

I think the sequel is the stronger of the two books, but I did enjoy the first. Rachel isn’t particularly likeable for most of it, but she’s not supposed to be! I really like Mammy Walsh, she makes me laugh 😁

My Labrador Friends Book Club - Fiction Choice

I've been working my way through Marian Keyes' books on Audible recently, following the recent release of "Again, Rachel", which is the follow-up of "Rachel's Holiday", which was released 25 years ago. Those two were a special treat, since Marian Keyes herself reads them. At the end of "Rachel's...

Slowing down, and gaining weight fast

I would weigh the food rather than use volume - using cups is terribly inaccurate. And, whatever any calculator says, metabolic needs are very individual. At the end of the day, if your dog isn't losing weight, you're feeding too much, whatever the BMR (RER) calcs say. And as your dog loses...
