A very agitated Bear - and effects of Suprelorin

Primrose’s mother was over 16 months before her first season. They told me that it’s very common for girls to have similar timing to their mother for first seasons
Yes, I have heard this too. Both Bramble and her mum were 12/13 months before their first season. Then Oh God! Bramble had a split season, and it looked like some animal had been butchered and dragged around the house! ( sorry if that is a bit graphic!) 🔪🔪🤯🤯

When did you have Ripple done?
At 7 months - the earliest I’d ever had a dog neutered. It certainly didn’t change his behaviour for the better and he still has a daily love affair with the sofa if he can.

Toffee is still entire and apart from his sudden overwhelming interest in 'girls' for a few weeks last month he’s been fine, @SwampDonkey suggested a herbal supplement I could try but I didn’t need it in the end as he lost interest as soon as the bitches along the road finished their season.

Poor Bramble it's so hard because we can't explain to them what's happening.

Bear is back from his walk today and the dog walker said he's been perfectly fine, no humping or being a sex pest! He walked with a different dog today, a young choccy lab girl, 12 months - and nothing naughty at all, just nice playing. He's come in, had a big drink, and is just settling down quietly on his bed - the complete opposite of yesterday when by now he was pining at the front door.
Dog walker has said he will keep me updated as to how over threshold he gets and we whether it does lessen over time.

However his focus is bang on and he is loving the 3week recall challenge. Keeping his mind trained is just as important as physical exercise!
I think this has to be my plan for the next month, he finds his environment so very, very interesting, that just occasionally even the best treat won't turn his head, so I probably need to up my game on being more exciting. I've just been looking through the recall challenge pages, I think I might have to try some of them on a long line to begin with.

Such an interesting thread. and thanks for sharing @Natalie - you're working blimming hard on this, don't forget to give yourself credit.

I also wondered if (and sorry if this is repeating previous comments or stating the obvious!) it might be worth keeping a brief subjective assessment record of Bear's behaviour as you perceive it might relate to hormones, sex drive etc.? Nothing too onerous, just a paragraph or a few bullet points with an easy/mediocre/difficult overall assessment for a month or two. Just an idea but I think I've read theories/evidence (?) that male dog hormones can fluctuate over time in a similar way to female hormones, more than was previously thought, and I wondered if it might help with any pattern recognition - i.e. if he becomes more hormonally-driven at certain times of the month or on a cycle.

I've noticed that as it got lighter the boys got more frisky in a sexual way there's also more in season covid bitches around this year.. Their owners really have no clue and cause a lot of problems wandering about dripping interesting smells(bitches not owners) I also think Iver has benefited from having a mature dog around who smells interesting things but just goes neer. He echos Rory's behaviour a lot so it does help.
So glad Bears feeling less overought today. He had one hell of an awaking yesterday your dog walker is really good so I hope things stay calm.

I think it does come as a bit of a shock what intense sexual creatures they can be. That overwhelm wave of need is astonishing. I think we forget because they are so sweet and funny that that need to breed trump's everything.plus they smell so much more intensely than us it must be like being on fire.

Some really good thoughts and suggestions from @HAH, keeping a journal not just with Bear, but how other dogs interact with him. Try to document, but not interpret if you can help it! :)

Certainly a young dog's hormones fluctuate, they are not static as such. I have read that levels start to surge in early adolescence, and can stay high for up to 2/3 years at a 9 fold increase vs normal. I have struggled to find the reference though but have heard this from reputable sources. This also may explain why other dogs suddenly find them more interesting and have different sometimes aggressive interactions with young adolescent males.

Absolutely! Especially when we know they are "nose intelligent" not "sight intelligent" if that makes sense? They perceive their world through scent, and this simply hangs around a bitch in season wafting long after she has gone.... must be like a sexually frustrated fella who can't switch off the porno channel! No wonder the poor dogs can't eat....and I wouldn't even try to offer that poor bloke pizza...

Leads me on to a bug bear of mine... do not walk your in season bitch on a lead.. no matter what time of day it is....

That's my pet hate too! It's so unkind on so many levels.
