Future Chocco Boy (Welcome Hugo Bear! )

@Kelsey&Axel poor Hugo or should I say poor you. I should think this is probably worrying you more than it’s bothering Hugo. The main thing is he’s eating, drinking and lively. If it is giardia he may have already had it when you got him. I think it can take a couple of weeks for symptoms to show. I hope the antibiotics kick in quickly.🤞

@Boogie Wow all that Ted can do sounds pretty good to me. If you think about it a dog that will ignore cats, squirrels and rabbits is quite a rare thing. Even if Ted is still too bouncy in a year it doesn’t mean he can‘t take his test in 2,3,4 years. With your experience and a bit of time I’m sure Ted will be a fabulous Therapy dog.

I’ve been a ball of worry and stress all day as Hugo was very quiet and his poop remained dark green, liquid with blood again through the day. He looked oddly skinny today, turns out he lost a pound since yesterday 🥺 Who knew one pound could make such a difference

I gave him his first dose of antibiotics at dinner time and he had a tiny bad poo again right after that which I suspected he would. But since then he’s had three small meals and no more poos at all… so I can only assume the meds are working and food isn’t just passing right through him anymore, and hopefully a decent stool is forming. He was more active a couple hours after the meds, tried to coax Gizmo to play, and puppy bowing while I vacuumed, and wanted to play with his toys.

Just breaks my heart and I can’t help but stress. It’s brought back memories of this time last year 💔

I’m going to sleep on the couch again just incase he needs me instantly. Really wishing for a firmer poo and a crazy hyper puppy come morning.

:hug: for you Kelsey. I am so sorry you are having this worry with Hugo . Definitely the right thing to sleep alongside him tonight xx

It does sound like he is responding to the meds. Are you able to have a phone consultation with your vets?
I called them this evening, just to calm my nerves basically. It helped and they told me that usually it takes two doses for the meds to work (a dose every 12 hours) and that as long as he is still very happy to eat and still drinking, to just keep monitoring him. Explained that his tummy doesn’t feel good so he won’t be his lively self but tomorrow he should be more himself by noon if the meds work. So it did help calm me going in to the evening hours, also very glad to see the meds seem to be helping ❤

Poor little Hugo. The vet‘s magic medicine will kick in (vet medicine always seems to work super quick) and your crazy hyper pup will be back I’m sure. I can imagine just how your feeling. I’m the same. Hunter had a dodgy tummy at the weekend and I’m still not convinced it’s not going to get worse again. When there’s something wrong it brings back memories for me too and it doesn’t matter how logically I try to think it through the worry takes over. I’ve been trying to think what Hunter could have eaten or licked or chewed so as to avoid it in the future but he’s a lab pup it could be anything. I can say don’t worry it’s not like last year but you’ll still have that horrible feeling until he’s better which he will be very soon. Just know your not on your own:hug:

Hmm no I hadn’t, but could be what this is. I’m just getting ready to head to the vet to pick up an antibiotic and after a quick research on Giardia, the antibiotic they are giving is what is used to treat Giardia. Least I’m pretty sure the name was metronidazole. I will know shortly for sure.

Not sure where he would have gotten it from 🥺 I haven’t let him down anywhere public except at the vet on their scale, which I guess could happen.
The cases I have known have already been in the pup when they got it. Will have to type this in capitals and spell checker won't let me do it in lower case! PANACUR is usuall the drug of choice.

Thanks for the well wishes for Hugo ❤ It’s 530am, set my alarm to give him his second dose, he slept 6 hours straight and had a good pee but no poo yet. Which, I think is a good sign so far still, his belly must have been very empty 🥺 but he’s being a lively boy so far!

Thank you for saying this because I was really questioning my sanity last night. But the memories and them being so small makes it very difficult. Thank goodness for magic vet medicine!
I’m sorry to hear Hunter had an upset tummy too, and I totally get it, the fear of it getting worse or coming back, but just try to live in the now of ‘he’s feeling better’ (says me, the girl having high anxiety right now😅). It’s true, Hunter could have eaten anything, it only takes a millisecond, we can watch them as best we can but they are puppies and labs at that!

@Kelsey&Axel I’m so glad Hugo is getting his chomp back. I’ve questioned my sanity many times Kelsey when it comes to my dogs and their bowels. To be honest I’m border line neurotic about it 🤪 Even if I can logically explain it I still go into panic mode when something goes wrong. Aren’t dogs supposed to reduce stress and anxiety? 😂 I’m hoping your next post includes firm poo 😜

Aren’t dogs supposed to reduce stress and anxiety? 😂
Right?!?! Honestly 😂 that’s ok, we can both be borderline neurotic together 😆 I’m already stressing about when the antibiotics end, then what? What if he gets worse again, what if what if what it.

Well, Hugo had one sloppy poo that definitely had some form, I was able to mostly pick up. Second poo was thick plops of diarrhea… so better formed. Third poo was a small plop of thicker diarrhea. All still very dark green in colour… that’s what’s worrying me a lot right now, I’ve never seen such dark green poo besides in hooman babies lol. Am I worrying for nothing? Honestly my gut is screaming at me that the canned GI food doesn’t agree with him, and i mentioned that to the vet reception girls, but they said it’s designed to be ultra sensitive for tummies so he should be fine on it. But that’s when his poo changed colour, that first can 😔

Ok the good thing is the poo is starting to firm up. I’m assuming your not giving him anything else other than the GI food. Personally I would either ring and speak to your vet or take Hugo back in. Obviously I don’t know the shade of green but it could be caused by bile not being reabsorbed so it makes the poop green. It can be caused by colitis which I’m sure you know is inflammation of the large intestine. There is a chance Hugo could have colitis as you did mention blood in his poo. Was there mucus stuff too ? I’ve experience with colitis. Murphy had it hence my neurosis of diarrhoea. Antibiotics will clear it up but because he’s so young and because of the colour I’d go back. No offence to the receptionist I’m sure she’s lovely but I‘d want a vets opinion if it’s still going on. Wow the conversations our dogs make us have. Oh by the way I’m also neurotic about bladder infections thanks to Scott and Scout. There’s really no hope for me.;)
