Homer being sick

It’s been a rollercoaster and I know I panicked on Saturday night/Sunday morning as he was fine by mid morning and back to himself. I’m away on a school trip to Cumbria so felt I needed him checked out before I left. I’m almost certain it was the tinned dog food. I gave him the whole tin as he wanted more dinner and I think it’s too much and too rich for him. There’s something at the exit of his stomach that is still somewhat unexplained.

Finally back home. Homer has been sick on and off all week, he was lethargic on Tuesday, luckily house house guest was with him and Hubby came home from work early. He’s been better the rest of the week but still some sickness. Hubby has been cooking chicken and rice for him. His bag of Purine hyper allergenic food has arrived. He’s also on Vit B12 tablets.
Homer came running to me with his tail wagging as I opened the door. Hubby said it’s the first time he’s wagged his tail all week! 😍

Homer as realised that his bland kibble are not really treats and not the same as what Hubby and I have. He has also learnt that he can hold on to socks and knickers for ransom for longer.

we have also learnt the hard and messy way that omeprazole must be given at leat 1/2 hour before food and not at the same time.
It’s a sad day when ransom items no longer have value :( well done on the omeprazole adaptation, hopefully that’s more successful :fingers:

Aaarrggg! He was sick again last night at about midnight. mostly bile and a little bit of kibble. Although much better than Friday. This sickness is stilll far too frequent despite the omerprazole easing the worst of it. I have soaked his kibble until it’s as soft as porridge and give him four smaller meals.

I still can’t find out if this is linked to his adreanal gland or something in his stomach that hasn’t been investigated yet. There’s no blood in the sickness or his poop. Pancreatitis was ruled out earlier. He’s not lethargic and has a good appetite.

just have to wait until Thursday when he has is adrenal gland taken out. I’m going to send an email on Monday. to both the specialist and our own local vet.

Thanks for all you support- this is a bit of an open diary.

I've forgotten, but have you tried greek yoghurt/prebiotics?

Omeprazole has its place, but it doesn't seem to be the solution for Homer.
With my doctor hat on, which is not the same as a vets hat, I would be using some kind of prokinetic, like metoclopramide and Gaviscon, once my patient had 4 to 6 weeks of omeprazole to heal any acid damage.

The yoghurt works in part like gaviscon. I have also read that raw ginger can help, too, and is safe for dogs, but no idea of the quantity or the best way to give it.

Of course, hoping surgery will just fix it all.

@Jacqui-S That's my gut feeling too. I am a bit surprised they havent suggested a probiotic yet. I will add that to my email. I used to give Homer a spoon of yoghurt every now and then or the yoghurt pot to lick out. He's now on a hyperallergenic food and they said nothing else.

Sad news - one of Homer's mantrailing frends Biggles the Beagle has also been diagnosed with suspected spleen or liver tumor and is going to the Aura vet in Guildford early next week. It's been a tough few months for our mantrailing group. Our trainer's father died (he was elderly) a member's husband died suddenly, Homer being ill and now Biggles. :'(

Sorry for the sad news @JES72 , it must feel relentless at the moment. Just an observation on the yoghurt:
He's now on a hyperallergenic food and they said nothing else.
When Kipper was young and had extended giardia issues, our vet recommended live goats yoghurt as a good probiotic that was very gentle for delicate stomachs. Expensive, but we found it helpful.
