Homer being sick

This is very welcome news - it must feel weird without him, roll on home time and the start of his (and your) recovery ❤‍ x

We picked Homer up from the vet yesterday afternoon. He is doing well. Peeing a lot Although he has runny poops.

They have shaved quite a lot more of his fur off, all the way up both sides for a scan of his digestive tract and a patch on his back near his tail for an epidural and a large patch on his neck for what they called a straight line iv drip. His fur will eventually grow back.

His skin that was shaved for his first surgery a few weeks ago is slightly darker than where it has been shaved this time. could be a bit of a tan as it’s been exposed for longer. Can I use sun block on his skin? *Edit - Or its just dirt! (Hubby's contribution) 9200CCDA-E19C-40F6-9944-32012BC679EE.jpegAFFC289C-D22F-4B87-ABFE-7803AE8F1409.jpeg

So pleased to hear Homer’s home and doing well after such big events. Hopefully his poo will firm up over the next couple of days, I imagine that’s potentially a reaction to the surgery/meds/general disruption.
That’s a lot of shaving isn’t it? And I’m sure you’re right, it’ll grow back in no time - sunscreen is a really good idea in the meantime, how sensible to think of it. It looks like there’s a lot of pet-friendly sunscreen out there - this one Heliovet spf50 dog and cat looks good but there’s a decent range, and some of the horse sunscreen looks quite economical given the volume.

So pleased he’s home. What a rollercoaster you’ve had.

Snowie’s skin that’s covered in fur is pink. The exposed skin is very dark, but it’s under his tummy which hardly ever sees the sun. I don’t think it’s a suntan in this case, just that it’s exposed and probably being irritated by the grass and licking etc. I’d first test a small part of Homer’s skin with sunscreen before using it everywhere. I know with myself, I get a rash if I’m wearing sunscreen and get very hot. Perhaps rather just keep him indoors when the sun is overhead (strongest)? If he needs to go out, I don’t think a few minutes in the sun will cause sunburn. In fact, here the recommendation from some dermatologists is to expose your skin without sunscreen for 20 mins everyday when the sun is overhead (strongest) to ensure adequate Vit D (of course, not to burn). Not sure how that works in dogs though!

So glad he is home with you
When I was managing Lilly's lupus, the recommendation for sunscreen was a powder preparation, due to ease of use and reduced lickability.
Something like This One
Just did a qiick google, there may be better, not sure about the pricing. In the end, as it was just a small area of nose, we used a children's waterproof SPF50, which we used trickery (and licky things) to give it a chance to soak in before being licked off.
