Keir - Guide Dog and Hearing Dog (dual trained)

So sad to see you go Keir but know that you are going to make your human mum so very proud and someone a fantastic helper and companion. Xxx

Here he is with his new lead. His trainer came and spent a couple of hours here chatting about Keir and getting to know him. Then he jumped in her car and off they went. ?

He’ll go to School for the afternoon, getting to know his new buddies, then she’ll take him to his boarders this evening. Just like a school boy he’ll be taken to school at 8am and picked up at 4pm, spending weekends at his new home (a young couple).

I’ve had a good weep, now it’s time to care for the little whippersnapper!

Will you get updates on how he is doing?

Out of interest (I know he won’t!) but what happens to the dogs that don’t pass the school? Are they regimes in other assistance dog ways or do they just keep going through the training?

Yes, I’ll get a phone call today from GDs and regular updates.

It depends why they were withdrawn. They can be withdrawn at any stage - they have tests from six weeks old. Spencer’s next test is next week (for food aggression, they can determine this very young and they are instantly withdrawn if they have it) one in four pups are withdrawn before they get as far as Big School. Then they are offered to be rehomed as pets (there is a waiting list)

During training, if they are withdrawn for a ‘minor’ thing like not liking the harness they are offered to other assistance dog charities. If it’s more serious like food distraction or bird/dog/animal/child/etc distraction they are withdrawn and offered back to their puppy walkers.

We have always made a firm decision not to accept them back if offered - it was very hard with Twiglet, but we did it as it would have been hard to carry on puppy walking. But we’ve already decided to have Keir back if he’s withdrawn and cross that bridge if it comes to it.

Here is Twiglet at her new home as a very happy pet, watching as many birds as she wants, her owners write every Christmas (they are not online). She looks so grown up! I see Bruce every day on Facebook with his owner - that’s just brill ?. Mollie has only just been matched - fingers and paws crossed her owner gets in touch, they will be given my details.

This is cute little Fred who was withdrawn any six weeks old. His temperament was not right for guiding He’s gone to a brood bitch holder who’s dog had just lost her long term companion. So his job will be caring for Mummy and puppies ?

Oh look at little Fred's face! What a cutie!

I thought it was Gypsy who had been withdrawn - am I getting my yellow ladies mixed up? Regardless, I'm glad that she's living a happy life. It's incredible to realise just how young these dogs are when they start guiding.
