Kipper’s got a limp

I hope it's OK to but in and ask, when you say rest, what does that involve? How long is the recommended resting for?

Cupar has a limp on his front leg. He started limping at the weekend and I thought it was a thorn, he's really good in lying down immediately to let me feel his paw but I could find nothing. It seemed to disappear then returned the next day, after his walk.
I never walked him yesterday but today I did some hiding food in the garden and sit stay, with hiding the ball. I thought wrongly that he wouldn't move as fast in the garden as he does in the field.
He's limping again.

After a week with a limp on and off and then by Friday constantly limping, I decided on Saturday to get a new tub of magnesium sulphate and steep his foot first in the Epsom salts bath before applying a clean sock with the paste.

I checked his foot tonight and could see 3 black dots on his pad and in between his big pad there was now something sticking out. Pulled out a thorn and another smaller piece at the other side. There is still a black dot on the top of the big pad so it's re dressed and I'll check tomorrow if it is just discolouration or another bit of thorn.

I was really starting to worry that he had injured something, I'm kicking myself for not trying the magnesium sulphate sooner.

Glad you got it sorted....don't beat yourself up, you did the right thing, had a good look and prod, then rested him for a bit. Those horrid teeny thorns are a bugger to treat!

20200428_084915.jpg@HAH , I hope kipper is still doing well and sorry for jumping on your post.
I thought I would update Cupars limp.
Today after getting 2 bits of thorn out, I was determined to keep at it until I resolved the very small black dot on his top pad. I'm glad I did. This is what came out this morning. Can I also add that my gorgeous boy allowed me to steep his foot in a mug of Epsom salts then poke and squeeze his paw until this appeared.

Wow, that's huge! Well done for persisting, that could have become really nasty!

No worries at all @Cupcase , and good gracious you've done brilliantly with Cupar's paw! That's a huge object to have worked out of there, he must be so much more comfortable. And it speaks volumes for your relationship that you were able to work away at it - well done both of you :)

Wow that thorn is amazing. Lucky boy that you persevered. What happens to thorns that don’t get squeezed out? Do they get absorbed after a while?

Wonderful. I'm glad it was nothing serious and you have been able to draw out these monster thorns. Cupar trusts you to fiddle & manipulate his ouch paw - that's a truly great relationship you have.

Not sure what would happen but this one was on the biggest pad and must have been painful, as the limp has now gone. No infection and it looked liked a blackhead, so I wasn't a 100% sure it was a thorn. After wrapping the paste on it, it seemed to get darker, so I had to pick off the skin that had grown over it. It hadn't went in at an angle, it was straight down.
