Sleep. Or lack thereof.

Depends on his weight. Rory has two 4mg tabs day and he's 32kg. It maybe worth ringing the vet they should be able to advise whether it's ok to give a pup. It know it's ok for adult dogs but not sure about pups.

Bloody dog! So last night I am singing his praises about what a wonderful dog he is.. so obedient... so responsive.

I get up this morning to absolute carnage :cwl: he’s chewed OHs glasses to bits (had to be other half’s didn’t it? So I have to suffer the lecture), Chewed one of my work shoes (my fault and hadn’t put them away!) plus 2 random letters that he’s shredded and had a good munch on the buttons of the remote control.

Take him for a walk to a woods near us... we have been there LOADS... never had an issue... it’s pouring with rain... I let him off and he is just gone. Literally in 5 seconds he’s out of sight. No warning, no nothing... I debate doing a recall as it’s a enclosed wood, no one in sight and I’m fairly sure he’s caught the scent of one of the many many squirrels... after a few minutes (maybe 90 seconds) he comes bombing back.... tail wagging so fast it’s a blur..... charges past me and chases another one... again I waited (such a difficult call, do you risk a recall fail or allow the chase!)... this time I spotted him and blew the whistle.... he stopped and ran straight back to me, threw his ball as a reward... then the shit went again! Squirrels appear to be a popular chase with him (oh good!)

We had a lovely 30 minute bomb about, he never went out of sight after the first time but loved chasing the squirrels (we saw over 30 in a 30 minute walk to highlight just how many there were!)

Also saw 4 dogs and he didn’t give any of them even a second glance so that’s good!

Any advise re the squirrels? I don’t avtually have an issue with him chasing them but don’t want to encourage the bombing off without permission... am I better off reinforcing it with making him get permission to chase them or is it better to not allow the chase at all?

I reckon on the squirrel front I'd be keen not to encourage the chasing - as Swampy says, I'd rather reduce occurences of the red mist which means nothing else in the world exists. But how to distract?

I guess if you know he's very likely to bomb straight off, and you know it's a squirrel-heavy site, maybe keep on the lead to begin with whilst everything is mega exciting. When you put up a squirrel, practise the 'eek eek!'-run-in-the-opposite-direction-and-treat routine whilst he's a captive audience. Once he's a bit more focussed you might be able to let him off - or you might need to use that bit of woods purely for anti-squirrel training for the timebeing.

thanks guys, to be honest if I have a tennis ball with me he doesn’t usually even glance around so I have options if I want to go to that woods! The description of ‘drunk’ is actually really accurate as that’s how he was acting!

Some or more daring than others. My life has really changed since Moo has died. The arms race I had with her was incredible she would find a way to steal move take anything. We had no bins on the house and the ones outside were kept locked away from her. She could open any door zips, buckles. I spent all her life time on guard and was hyper vigerlant because of her all the time. It's strange now Rory is like Doug,. They do/did occasionally nab something but it's not often. Rory likes to dance about with cushions in his mouth but neither boys were destructive. Moo wasn't destructive but she had to he watched constantly. She would make her own entertainment nothing stopped her she was relentless in a quiet patient way. I can believe how different my life is now.its strange.

She was a very clever little dog she was the bane and blessing of my life. I had so many adventures due to her unique slant on life. How she never killed herself or I killed her I will never know. She taught me so much in her long happy life, helped me develop the way I train and treat my dogs. There was never a dull moment with her and she was hilarious. She was the boss she was tiny stroppy and sneaky, she liked her own way. I miss her we went everywhere together.

I'm glad it's not just Maxx who finds and chews anything in reach. We are becoming experts at clearing every surface. @Leanne I got the same lecture when OH left his precious slippers out. What the eff IS that anyway?
No. It’s absolutley not just Maxx. It’s like has suddenly been given the gift of sight! Everything is being ‘brought to me’ though.. ‘look mum!’ 🙄😂

You are doing so well with outdoor training @Leanne. You should be damn proud!

We would have zero chance of Maxx not taking off. He is desperate for dog interaction and we can't let him off lead in many places in case one pops up. Hopefully our slow progress with Total Recall using the whistle will have results soon. I'm not holding too much hope that he will ever recall from another dog though.

He will just keep at it and lay the groundwork. The main problem is he's a puppy in an adult dog body. They get less interested in other dogs as they get older. You get to be more important than other dogs and they would rather be with you than them eventually. They are just silly over grown pups. All mine went through this the oh wow a doggie stage. Doug was very young when he became my follower. Moo well she only cared for her own stuff anyway, Rory was just my darling from early on so I got him through this quickly. Just hang on in there it will be ok when his s brain matures a bit more.
