Glad he’s home! He’ll be feeling so much better in a day or two. I’d go for a cone... If he gets the stitches out he’ll have to go through it all again and it’s just not worth it.

It might have happened really quickly. It might not have been there at all prior to the day you checked it. So definitely don't berate yourself about this. You did a great job to find it - you are very, very diligent to have a checking regime and to have caught this lump.

She might get an idea of what it is by how it looks and behaves when she removes it.

Within a week, from memory (was 20 years ago). It was pretty quick.

Diet. Our first Lab was like this. We switched to a home cooked diet (mix of cooked and raw). Problem solved. Not sure exactly what the problem was but it was something to do with commercial kibble.

Obi is great with our chooks/ducks and with wild birds. We’re finally taking steps to get him used to our horses in case we meet other horses on walks. He can finally now be near a horse without launching himself into space 😁 But it’s still strictly on lead around livestock or kangaroos.

It’s really tough. There is no right or wrong timeframe. Sounds like taking it slow might be a plan for now though. Remove the pressure of having to make a decision...and maybe let this one through to the keeper.
