Doggy brags

I'm not quite sure when this happened, as I guess it's always felt like slow progress but, Ella has an absolutely amazing recall!

Tonight we were playing in the park and a lady with two elderly dogs (on lead) had entered the park too. Before I'd even realised they were there, Ella shot past me and was headed towards them at full speed 😱. In a normal spoken voice I said "Ella, come". She whipped around on the spot and flew back to me at full speed, nearly crashing into my legs!

I gave her a handful of treats, grabbed her favourite rope out of my pocket and had the best play with her 🥰

Great work Ella! That's one proud mum.

At dog school this week we lined all the dogs up in a sit then backed off 10 paces. Coco (with OH) was the ONLY dog to remain there in his sit, proudly wagging his tail (he wags the tip of it when he looks super proud of what he's doing). Meg(an) Sparkle was second best dog, has she remained in situ, but she did keep lying down (and we haven't yet mastered the back to sit at any kind of distance so I had to keep going back to her). All other dogs broke position several times. My dogs are best! My dogs are best! Uh-ho - pride comes before a...........

I think if you have a good recall, you have everything. I wish my Rourke was like that, he does have a good recall normally, but if another dog comes too close to him, he won't recall. My friend has just adopted an ex racing Greyhound and his recall is amazing, I think a good reward is the secret and you do have a fantastic reward.

Just as an aside, I used to know a chap whose dog was very reluctant to recall and when it did, he beat it, I tried to point out, would he (the man) come to me, if every time he came back, I slapped him across the face. But failed to get through to him:sad:

Thats so sad @Jelinga poor dog with a disillusioned owner , and a cruel one at that x

I am proud of Nelly at the moment . On Tuesday at the beach , she took it all in her little stride , and seemed to really enjoy herself , not fazed at all by the big three flying around . Then the same at Golitha Falls this morning , she kept up to speed with the gang , no lagging behind but she is shattered now x

Do you have a tried and tested technique? Thank you for giving some of us laggards hope
Honestly, I'm a first time dog owner (I never even grew up with dogs, if anything, I was a bit scared of dogs). I have no clue what I'm doing and only recently, via this forum, realised that Ella wasn't just naturally staying near me and that my constant rewarding was the reason that she stayed close.

When you think of how quickly @Boogie gets a great recall from her pups, my four years is quite poor by comparison!

For us, I think that a bit of maturity, combined with such heavy reinforcement of recalling and staying close has finally worked.

You are giving me some hope @Emily - Maxx's recall is spotty at best. Zero with other dogs around and it depends which dog wakes up as to whether he comes without distractions. I think it also depends on what treats are on offer that day.

I don't post here for obvious reasons BUT on Sunday we were out walking and two little girls, about 5 or 6 years old, came running over asked if they could pat Maxx

Gawd

We sat him down and murmured 'look at that's until he seemed calm. I told the girls that if he licked them it meant he was being friendly. And if he took a hand in his mouth he wouldn't bite, he just liked to hold people's hands that way (creative huh?)

After one initial head thrust he sat there like a little lamb while they parted him and cooed about how soft and gentle he was.

Phew. Good boy Maxx! Much praise and treats given :sun:
